Choosing the Acne Treatment That’s Best

by David Warple

Various medical remedies are available for the treatment of acne. It is not unusual to find that the first remedy that a person tries does not work. For that reason, physicians may have to prescribe more than one treatment for a person before the condition is resolved.

Treating acne can prove rather difficult. This is because every case of acne differs per individual. Successful treatment is found only after a vast amount of experimentation and trial and error. For those searching for a quick-fix cure, this can prove frustrating. This is especially true for those with a stubborn strain of acne. It is beneficial to see a doctor or dermatologist with a lot of experience in treating acne, so they can lend their own professional experience.

Some things should never be done when dealing with acne. Acne affected skin should never be scrubbed. Irritation and inflammation will result, making healing more difficult due to increased numbers of pimples.

The treatment prescribed for you will be determined by the symptoms that are exhibited. The emphasis of your treatment will be in one or more of the following areas: unclogging pores; eradicating bacteria through use of antibiotics; reduction in the quantity of oils by using medications such as Accutane; or changing the balance of hormones that affect the sebaceous glands, perhaps by using oral contraceptives.

Topical creams are most doctors’ first line of approach. These creams are not a cure, but like most treatments, will help control symptoms. If these prove ineffective by themselves, topical creams may be combined with antibiotics (to be taken orally).

Benzoyl peroxide is an effective ingredient in most topical creams, but it should only be used in small amounts. Using too much of it, or for too long, has been shown in studies to cause premature skin aging where previously this medication was thought completely safe.

Working with a trained professional that you trust is essential to the successful elimination to acne. Attempting to self-medicate or self-treat is also not advised. Only a doctor in an antiseptic environment should attempt pimple removal.

Being patient is also necessary. Acne does not clear up overnight, even in the best of cases. As a matter of fact, even after you find a treatment that works, your skin is likely to get worse prior to improving. Most of the time doctors recommend continuing a treatment for at least four to six weeks before you can expect to see results. You can expect to try several different treatments before finding the one that works for you, so don’t give up if the first one doesn’t work.

One Response to “Choosing the Acne Treatment That’s Best”

  1. We need to keep after prevention & cure. Control and remission are getting better - through diet and medication. It is hard to sift out the genuine research from the frauds.
