Stretch marks are caused when the skin is stretched suddenly : More accurately, the skin’s second layer (the dermis), becomes torn due to over stretching. The worst affected areas for stretch marks are the stomach, breasts, thighs and hips. People of all ages can suffer from striae (the technical term for stretch marks) and they affect most of the population. Fortunately, our health is not affected by them and only affect us cosmetically. Of course, As it becomes warmer, and we wear fewer clothes, our concerns about stretch marks increase.

What causes stretch marks?

This stretching occurs when the body grows so fast that the skin can’t stretch quick enough to keep up with it. Stretch marks are most frequently associated with pregnancy but can develop during puberty: Body building and rapid weight gain can also result in stretch marks.

Although the skin is usually fairly elastic , when it stretches, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. It is this collagen which helps to ensure that the skin remains firm and supple. There are other factors which affect the skins ability to make and keep up collagen levels such as a person’s diet or smoking. Collagen levels affect the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines. They also largely dictate how other blemishes, such as acne scars or even surgery scars, heal.

What do stretch marks look like?

When initially formed, stretch marks are reddish purple lines. They are indented and maintain a different texture to the surrounding skin. as they get older, the deep colour fades, turning a lighter colour, generally silver,and fade away slightly. However they very rarely heal on their own.

Treating stretch marks can be achieved in several different ways. Stretch mark treatments vary wildly in cost and effectiveness, treatments range from creams to cosmetic surgery for most people, stretch marks are ugly and undesirable and stop people from being confident about their bodies, but this is overcome or reduced by treatment to remove stretch marks.

cream is one form of stretch marks removal treatment which is easy to obtain and easily used but, only a small amount of the creams is absorbed into the skin therefore, creams are not affective in stretch marks removal. Combining this process with techniques such as micro-dermabrasion, allows a much higher percentage of cream absorbed by the skin so this method is the most effective method for most people.
