Tattoo Removal Creams: What’s The Deal Here?

The last few years have seen a surge in the amount of tattoo removal creams being sold on the market. Mostly marketed on line but sometimes in tobacco shops and the like, these products are sold over the counter with no doctor involved, no pain-causing treatments, and no medical experience necessary to do it yourself. That it the whole catch – you can buy these creams and apply them at home, a true “do it yourself” tattoo removal method.

But is it that simple really – do the creams do the job they purport to do? And are they safe? These are good questions to ask before shelling out the cash for something like Tattoo Off or Wrecking Balm, two of the most popular products. In this article we will take a look at these questions and offer some answers of our own, beginning with the safety of tattoo removal creams.

So are they safe? It would appear the answer is “yes”. How is such a claim made? Because the ingredients used are what’s considered by the FDA to be safe under the term “generally recognized as safe.” So tattoo removal creams that get this seal should be viewed with the same – or lack of – suspicion as many, many other beauty products that have the same classification.

There are lots of different tattoo removal lotions and whatnot out there, but for the most part, anything sold over the counter works the same way. You’ll be told to put on the first layer which prepares your skin for treatment. The second lotion is what actually effects the ink, fading it from the body, and the third lotion is applied to seal the second and help it works its magic. Over time, the idea is that repeated applications eventually fade the ink into oblivion.

That is, at least, how it’s supposed to work. Note that companies like Wrecking Balm call it a removal AND fading cream, implying it might only fade the ink but not remove it. This makes sense as it works best on older tattoos. New ink may be harder to fade out in the same way. For such situations, a technique such as rejuvi or laser removal might make more sense in the long run.
