In recent years an alternative to regular tanning has been to use sun-beds or booths; it has become the way to ensure a tan twelve months of the year. It is the dangers of overexposure to the sun that has lead to this prevalence of alternative methods at the same time that skin cancer is on the increase.

The latest method proving very popular (owing to its speed) is spray tanning as it only requires a single application. Originally it was the creams and bronzing lotions that were the most commonly used but spraying the tan on gives a more professional finish.

Manufacturers, quick to join the rush, have produced home spray tanning systems. Whichever method you decide upon there are some simple but basic steps needed to ensure the best effect. Cleaning the dead skin off your body is the most important step using a proprietary exfoliation scrub which can be bought from any drugstore. What you don’t want is for people to recognize your tan is a fake by noticing paler patches of skin where the dead skin cells have dropped from your body.

Once this process is complete, it is advisable to prepare your skin further by applying a moisturizing cream (or lotion) to it which will make the agent easier to apply. Always, always, always wear disposable surgical gloves when applying a self tanning cream etc. Lighter coats should always be applied to the joints and feet as they will appear darker, which is a dead giveaway that fake tan has been applied. If you are using a spray tanning method then you will need an old towel to wipe any excess fluid away to stop streaking.

To avoid any smears, marks or cracking, you will need to relax and remain still, while the tanning agent dries. Remember that these agents aren’t prejudiced and will tan clothes just as well as they do your skin, so be careful when choosing what you wear afterwards.

If possible always choose clothing that is darker and preferably something that is old and won’t matter if a stain is left on it. Armed with this information it should be easier to have a fake tan that is safe and available all year round without anyone knowing what it is you are doing.
