What Should You Know About Rosacea Treatment?
Rosacea is a chronic and progressive disease of the skin, characterized by small red spots (papules), facial erythema (redness), visible broken blood vessels and irritated eyes. Cheeks and nose are usually the first areas affected, followed by forehead and chin. Approximately 10% of the population is affected by this condition. Only the doctor can prescribe an effective rosacea treatment.
It’s not known what exactly causes rosacea. One of the theories states that the reactivity of blood vessels is responsible for its occurrence. Some specialists consider that small parasites (Demodex folliculorum) living on the skin can trigger this condition.
This condition is worsen by hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, exposure to sun, exhausting exercise, stress, anger or embarrassment, hot baths and saunas, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, benzoyl peroxide, etc.
It’s recommended to ask for the advice of a doctor if you notice red spots, redness, pimples and small thin lines on the face, irritated eyes, and dense nodules.
Rosacea is considered a non-curable skin disease. The treatment usually reduces the symptoms intensity. Untreated, this disease gets worse and its symptoms tend to become permanent. Most doctors prescribe a different treatment for each type of rosacea:
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea is manifested by small blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias), redness of the skin and burning or itching sensations. People who are affected by this form of rosacea can’t use any kind of face creams. Therefore, most doctors recommend laser therapy and anti-inflammatory products.
Papulopustular rosacea symptoms include pimples (pustules), erythema and telangiectasias. In this case, the treatment consists in ointments and antibiotics.
Phymatous rosacea is manifested by an enlargement of the nose, large pores, and nodules, thickening skin, erythema and irregular surface nodularities. Most doctors will prescribe isotretinoin or laser therapy.
Ocular rosacea causes red, irritated and dry eyes, itching and burning. It can be treated with ointments containing an antibiotic.
Before following the treatment prescribed by your doctor, you can try some natural remedies, following some rules to prevent complications. Use cosmetic products with no alcohol and opt for SPF creams. Follow a healthy diet and avoid the consumption of alcohol, spices and hot drinks. Stay away from abrasive substances, such as facial scrubs, brushes, loofa sponges and harsh puffs, because these products irritate the skin. Use moisturizing creams and keep your skin hydrated. Rosacea treatment will be truly effectively only if you take these rules seriously.
