What to Expect With Morning Sickness
If you are pregnant or you are attempting to get pregnant then it is very common to want to know what may be in store for you and what you are facing. You have no doubt heard about morning sickness and you might be wondering what some of the symptoms are.
The most common symptoms are of course nausea and vomiting. And the fact that it is called morning sickness certainly doesn’t mean that you can’t get it at other times of the day too. In fact many have to contend with it all day and into the evening. Vomiting is usually they way your body gets rid of bacteria and other things that it deems to be unsafe or that could lead to more serious illness.
You can feel the nausea at any time of day including the late afternoon and evening so don’t be fooled by the misnamed “morning” part. It is similar in sensation to a mixture of a head and motion sickness. And yes, vomiting comes with the territory.
One common theory for the cause of morning sickness is the massive increase in the hormone levels of progesterone. It is responsible for the softening of the bodies muscles, including those located in the stomach. The result is a slower functioning stomach that impacts how the food is passed through. The theory suggests that this is what makes you feel nauseous.
Not trying to function on an empty stomach can be helpful too. Keep nutritious snacks handy and eat those to keep the nausea at bay. Whole wheat crackers, breads and dried fruit are all good suggestions for a healthy bite to eat and does not contain much sugar. If you do make a habit of ingesting these then you can also avoid binge snacking on unhealthy choices that can lead to unnecessary weight gain and a greater risk of getting stretch marks.
Interesting is that women in the eastern parts of the world usually do not suffer from morning sickness. This is because they are accustomed to preventing it by avoiding the known triggers. By paying attention to what your body is telling you and reacting accordingly, you too can minimize these effects.
Pregnancy can be an very enjoyable and exciting time in a woman’s life. You do not want to spend it worrying about constantly feeling sick. Morning sickness stresses your day to day functionality including time spent working and with family and friends. By taking the time to prevent what you can and treating the rest you can mostly avoid the worse of what this common condition afflicts.
