I have always tried to care for my skin, to use healthy skin care methods and make sure my skin is always healthy and happy.  Part of this for me is not using a lot of makeup and always keeping moisturizer on hand if my skin starts to get dry.  I have used a skin exfoliate before, but until I saw an episode of DermTV with Dr. Neal Schultz, I never realized how important a daily exfoliation regimen could be.

 

Our skin cells are created in the dermis layer, deep under the out layer of skin.  Slowly, these cells migrate up to the surface over the span of 28 days.  As they migrate they build up keratin and acid, they lose their elasticity and eventually die.  The older we get the more uneven this process becomes, leaving pockets of dead skin cells which clog our pores and make our skin look dull and rough.  We exfoliate to remove the dead surface skin cells and let the new healthy skin shine through. 

 

I guess I’d always thought the body did a pretty good job of handling that process on its own. However, according to Dr Schultz, the older we get the more the cells tend to stick around beyond their 28 day life span.  These dead cells can build up creating dull, uneven looking skin and preventing the healthy skin cells from breathing.  Too much build-up of dead skin can promote acne and may even become cancerous.  So exfoliating on a daily basis is important for healthy skin.

There are only two types of exfoliation.  Dr. Schultz explains that chemical exfoliation uses a compound or ointment to remove the “glue” that holds the cells together.  Without the glue, the cells fall off much faster, allowing the younger, softer skin to rise to the surface.Manual exfoliation is like using sandpaper and there are a number of skin scrubbers available.Like sandpaper, the coarse side removes the upper skin layer which is often just dead skin, allowing the lower layer a chance to breathe.  By exfoliating on a daily basis your skin will always be fresh and healthy. This means all of your skin, including your body – scrub in the shower with a loofa or sea sponge. I want to have the best skin possible so I will exfoliate daily to allow new skin to shine through.
